George Banks (Steve Martin) and his wife, Nina (Diane Keaton), are the proud parents of Annie (Kimberly Williams), but when she returns from studying abroad and announces that she's engaged, their whole world turns upside down, especially that of overprotective George. From meeting the in-laws to wedding plans with an over-the-top consultant (Martin Short) and his flamboyant assistant (B.D. Wong), it seems as if the troubles never end in this update of the classic Spencer Tracy comedy.

Critics Consensus

While it doesn't quite hit the heights of the original, this remake of the 1950 classic is pleasantly enjoyable, thanks in large part to winning performances from Steve Martin and Martin Short.

The film's sole dramatic preoccupations are with broad physical comedy and unrealistically offbeat characterizations; a few moments of nominal pathos are really just structural pauses in the joke series. Go to Full Review Richard Corliss TIME Magazine May 23, 2011
Neither the '90s nor the husband-wife team of Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer (they wrote the new version, she co-produced, he directed) can match the original film's grace or wit. Go to Full Review Empire Magazine May 23, 2011

The film does work, but not quite as well as the Hepburn-Tracy classic that it seeks to replace. Mildly amusing. Go to Full Review Dan DiNicola The Daily Gazette (Schenectady, NY) Dec 18, 2025

A promising comedy which runs out of ideas. Go to Full Review Mike Davies Birmingham Post Apr 13, 2022
Despite the cliches, shameless sentimentality and rampant unsubtlety, it’s an engagingly enjoyable comedy tear-jerker. Go to Full Review Rachel Wagner Rachel's Reviews (YouTube) Nov 27, 2020
My favorite performance from Steve Martin especially the scene where he flips out over hot dogs Go to Full Review Read all reviews
