The implausible escape of a brilliant murderess brings U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner to Ashecliffe Hospital, a fortress-like insane asylum located on a remote, windswept island. Joanna T @aerialgirly92 6d Interesting thriller w/ an unexpected twist at the end. I wouldn't watch it again only bc it's sad. A cop goes to Shutter Island bc he hears about a psychiatric ward there that conducts inhumane experiments on ppl. He also wants to find the guy who set an apt on fire & that killed his wife. He is also ex-military/army which I thought was an unnecessary aspect added to the film. In the end, it turns out that he's the traumatized crazy one whose wife killed their 3 children bc she's manic-depressive & she asked him to set her free (from her thoughts?) and so he shot/killed her. He has trauma from that & invents a character/world in which he doesn't kill anyone & in which he's a cop & isn't who he is. The mental ward was acting out a play to bring his reality to his senses & it was a good ward all along. He pretends to regress bc he can't face the truth and to "die as a good man" may be better than to "live as a monster". Gets lobotomy = memory erased? This movie's twists and turns and clever revelations throughout make for a suspenseful rollercoaster ride with Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo leading the way. The cinematography was really good, the mood was conveyed perfectly, and the score was haunting in the best possible way. This film is one of my favorites, definitely recommend to anyone willing to watch a masterful psychological thriller for the ages.
