Critics Consensus

Despite strong performances from Bruce Willis and Mos Def, 16 Blocks is a shopworn entry in the buddy-action genre.

A happier surprise is the smart work of director Richard Donner: 16 Blocks is all jumble and jangle-crowds, snarled traffic, and discordant car horns. Go to Full Review

Fast-paced, tense and intermittently exciting, Donner's latest will keep genre fans engaged with its polished blend of tried and tested elements. Go to Full Review

Told in nearly real-time 16 Blocks stops and starts, putting in buffers for decent character moments between Jack and Eddie. It's necessary to understand why they do what they do, but it makes what they're doing occasionally dull. Go to Full Review

At its heart, this is actually an excellent film. But, as filmmakers seek to escalate the big action, believability suffers severely. Go to Full Review

Cork B @RT87142816 4d Started out somewhat decently but just cratered from there. Bruce is great, I love Bruce, but he sometimes picks dogs, and this is one. Bruce made his chops playing troubled characters - and here the director REALLY leaned in... "look worse, Bruce! Racoon eyes. More flop sweat!" Couldn't understand a word Mos Def was saying. I think he couldn't do an American accent, so he tried channeling Urkel. Had to turn on captions. Morse is a decent bad guy I guess, but the whole thing collapses under the weight of its ridiculously stupid and unbelievable plot and stupid ending. I mean, yeah Die Hard does some similar things, but this is a PAPER thin imitation of those movies with almost none of the suspense or character empathy. See more Shay W @RT24244689 Jun 7 It's a likeable good movie. More character than action driven. While there is little action, some of the scenes are quite tense. Reading some audience reviews, they didn't like Mos Def's voice, but not knowing how he actually talks, it didn't bother me and seemed to suit the character. David Morse is excellent and it's a nice restrained performance by Bruce Willis. See more Larry L @RT53584283 03/08/2025 This maybe one of Bruce's best unknown movies. See more Read all reviews
