Following a stint in jail, Adam (Ulrich Thomsen), a former neo-Nazi, is temporarily assigned to live in a religious enclave. The community is led by Ivan (Mads Mikkelsen), an eternally optimistic priest who immediately gets under the skin of the gruff Adam. In order to move forward with his rehabilitation, Adam must select a task, so he decides to bake an apple pie. However, his simple choice is complicated by Ivan's insistence that Adam use apples from a tree that is plagued by problems.

This Danish comedy, like most of that country's dramas, is dark, dark, dark. The film's humor offers an odd blend of subversively sly narrative mixed with bursts of sudden, sharp violence and goofy slapstick.

A film that asks us to have a pretty high tolerance of easy stereotypes and most of its comedy comes because you're not sure what else to do but laugh. When the ironic reversal kicks in, the film turns semi-serious and gets, if anything, a little boring.

In my opinion, this movie is the best film exploration of faith, ever. Very dark, very funny, frequently shocking and disturbing, it explores the ideas of the Book of Job in a completely unique and very entertaining way. I saw it over a decade ago and still think of it frequently.

What a strange film... a very good one, mind you. The cast do great work in this 2005 release. Mads Mikkelsen being the obvious standout - top performance! Ulrich Thomsen doesn't really do all that much necessarily, yet still manages to make a big impact with his showing - amusing, by the way, how much hair can change the way you see someone, that ending is quite the mild cranium contort*! I'm not really all that sold on what the film attempts to tell, but I can't deny that I had a pleasant time watching it all unfold. I wouldn't actually say it features that strong humour, perhaps some of it was lost in translation (Viaplay's subs were iffy in patches), but all that's there is enough. There is one joke at the death that is probably one of the most insulting, hitting both racist and ableist, that I've ever heard - black comedy, I know, I know. Aside from all that, final notes: sound and cinematography - super atmospheric in parts. Would I recommend 2005's 'Adam's Apples'?
