Cravalho shines (as always) but the colour blind/diverse casting of her friends means nothing when they're shallow, 1-dimensional characters. The film's emotionally manipulative narrative disguises an uncomfortable message about the "deserving poor"

I thought this movie was so awesome. The only letdown was at the end when I thought I was going to hear her sing again. She has such a beautiful voice. I was anticipating an ending like in the movie Flashdance, where she comes out of the school “pumping her fists”.
