Critics Consensus

Chris Evans' directorial debut is modest to a fault, with a threadbare story and minimal style leaving his and Alice Eve's likable performances adrift in New York City with nowhere to go.

While this kind of tale is a fantasy for the movies, with an emphasis on realism in style and deliberately paced story, "Before We Go" suggests that it really can happen, even just for a fleeting moment. Go to Full Review Ella Taylor NPR Sep 4, 2015
Slight and familiar but sweet enough for Saturday night, Before We Go is the umpteenth re-up of Brief Encounter, not that there's anything wrong with that. Go to Full Review Christy Lemire RogerEbert.com Sep 4, 2015

Very little here is special, despite the individual charms of Evans and co-star Alice Eve. Go to Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Feb 16, 2024

For the new independent film Before We Go, it's Chris Evans's turn to be be a first-timer. The promise is there, but he has a long way to go. Go to Full Review Ruth Maramis FlixChatter Film Blog Jun 14, 2022

Chris Evans is wise to pick a script that deals with a small cast that takes place over the course of a single night for his directorial debut. Evans and Eve have a pretty sweet chemistry and the tentative romance between them feels earnest. Go to Full Review Mae Abdulbaki Movies with Mae May 2, 2019

Before We Go is mediocre at best and ultimately a forgettable film. Still, it's also somehow decently entertaining despite its shortcomings and occasionally drawn-out melodrama. A film best seen from the comfort of your own home. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Eric W @RT44269564 Sep 5, 2026 I had so much hope for the premise of this movie. I love New York spent a lot of time in Grand Central station and yet while the movie had glimpses of real New York there was so much inauthenticity that I found it really annoying. Like the bartender who had an inside access to a pocketbook theft? And the corporate event where they paid cash on the spot? Chris Evans did okay but Alice Eve seemed like a cardboard cutout. Story was so contrived it was annoying. See more John S @LoneJohnny5 Sep 2, 2026 I thought this was really good, although it is a bit slow in spots. Acting, dialog and chemistry are great. I would've given 5* except for the ending; more closure is needed to complete the story. Note this reminded me of Taxi Driver in that it is dialog based. See more Algielyn E @chielmace Jun 11, 2026 adorable yet ended me in every way. kidding aside, It was filmed beautifully. Love at first sight, yet did not pay off . I was really hoping brooke might come back just to say "You are right and i ended things with michael. I love you, nick." ngi, too good to be true... I WAS JUST HOPING!!!!! See more Thyaagu C @Thyaagu May 2, 2026 3.75 ⭐️ A lean, heartwarming watch that never drags. Alice Eve is the MVP - glowing, warm, and effortlessly cozy from start to finish. Just wish we got more of those dreamy New York night lights instead of so many closeups. See more Nicole M @RT77577329 Mar 30, 2026 an adorable movie for people who are still hurting or just can't move on. love through chris evans' eyes just feels so refreshing for a reason. See more Robin B @inkcharmed Mar 8, 2026 Honest, sweet, with a sense of wholeness. I'm glad I didn't flinch at the rating on here, because I really loved this one. See more Read all reviews
