Richard Linklater's Blue Moon tells the story of legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart bravely facing the future as his professional and private life unravel at the opening night party for his former partner's hit show Oklahoma! By the time this night is over, Hart will have confronted both a world that no longer values his talent and the seeming impossibility of love.

This is a movie that is carried mainly by the masterful performance of Ethan Hawke. In fact, it is almost a one man show, but with good supporting performances by Bobby Cannavale, Margaret Qualley, Andrew Scott, Patrick Kennedy and Jonah Lees.

So damn well written & acted & executed with great simplicity - a beautiful and heartbreaking character study & story. I think its Hawkes best role to date. And Linklater continues his remarkable trajectory of great filmmaking, never falling into a rut of repetition.

While Hart is a sad, pathetic and, at times, uncomfortable man, Ethan Hawke brings him to life in expert fashion. He is mesmerizing. One of the best performances of the year. Linklater is an expert at portraying complicated and nuanced love, and he does that again with this entry. But the most impressive feat is how he is able to capture 1940s NYC and show business while staying in the same room for 90% of this runtime.

Really enjoyed it, Ethan Hawke is phenomenal. Felt like a play as the whole movie takes place in the same location and that was apropos. Perhaps not for everyone but my husband and I enjoyed it from start to finish.
