At the start of the New Year, 32-year-old Bridget (Renée Zellweger) decides it's time to take control of her life -- and start keeping a diary. Now, the most provocative, erotic and hysterical book on her bedside table is the one she's writing. With a taste for adventure, and an opinion on every subject - from exercise to men to food to sex and everything in between - she's turning the page on a whole new life.

Critics Consensus

Zellweger's Bridget Jones is a sympathetic, likable, funny character, giving this romantic comedy a lot of charm.

Even on an umpteenth rewatch, Bridget Jones’s Diary remains side-splittingly funny. You can know every beat by heart and still find yourself gasping for air when Bridget slides down the fireman’s pole live on television.

Sadly, the film is tragically, depressingly, awfully of its time... The transition to screen stripped out much of Fielding's irony, nuance and cynicism.

You don’t have to be a Gen Xer to laugh out loud at the very British “fight” between the male leads. Still a true cultural classic.

Even 25 years later, Bridget Jones’s Diary remains charming, funny, and surprisingly relatable.

24 years on, there's still a lot to love about Sharon Maguire's charming British comedy, even after all the discourse.

Terribly so cheesy and so dated - a portrayal of women as dumb and with a low self-esteem, and entirely dependent on men. An insult to women.

I don't know why, but every year around Christmas I feel compelled to rewatch this movie. It's warm, romantic, witty, and filled with festive cheer—the actress's charm is simply limitless.

What makes this particularly different and entertaining than others is Zellweger's natural performance. Very fun to watch.

1 billion/10. i've rewatched this films more times than i could remember. i relate to bridget so much and as a teenage girl this is always one of the films i come back to when ive had a rough day. it's funny , romantic, interesting , and each film has a certain charm to it not only this one. It's rare i'll say all films in a saga are good but my god i'd watch every single one over and over again. beyond perfection .

Honestly I was 60/40 I felt that it portrayed a dumbed downed version of women. And the fact she’s going back and fourth between these two men? It’s just infuriating. It feels like it was a choice of the producers for Bridget to be portrayed as a men loving ditzy female.
