Mortensen puts on an touching performance as a dad just trying his best in his own strange way. The road trip family adventure tone is charming with some beautiful landscape shots. Subtle in its emotion with a thoughtful look at parenting, societal norms, & being yourself. Yet it’s all a bit too heavy handed & quirky to fully work for me. Mortensen plays a father who has estranged his children from the world that you and I know, choosing to live in the forest and hunt game, homeschool the children, and teach them to question and analyse everything, rather than taking anything for granted. Problems begin when the mother dies, and the family has to deal with society again, while they endeavour to ensure that her final wishes are honoured. When I spend the second half of a movie with a lump in my throat, that's a sign that I've seen something worth my time. The performances from Mortenson and the children entirely engulf you in the family's plight. It's a long time since I've seen a movie that's moved me this much and I would highly recommend this to fans great drama. If you're a kid into skybeams and CG battles, it may not be your thing. The premise is fine but it's Highly Contrived and Far Fetched. A off-the-grid family of super intellectuals who also kill their own food. the performances are all great but it's like, come on- this couldn't ever be real on any level. Still it's a decent movie.
