Alfonso Cuaron stages some terrific set-pieces, and the production designers deserve credit for making London in 2027 look like the grunge capital of the world, ie, like now, only more so. One small problem: I didn't believe any of it.

Among so many commercial post-apocalyptic films these days, I was surprised to see one so elaborate. At first, I wasn't narratively convinced: a man in the apocalypse, conversations with his friend, the fatalistic world... but I was impressed by the number of themes it touches on. Hope in youth, faith, the symbolism of religious beliefs, and especially, migration. When this theme is introduced, the film truly shines. Kee's story is much more symbolic than simply being a pregnant immigrant woman after a long time. How can one forget what children are like? I reflected a lot on the importance of these beings who sometimes make me uncomfortable. This film doesn't bother to give you many explanations; however, you'll have to resist the urge to know why. Here, what matters is what society does about it. The way immigration is portrayed is visceral. The set design and camera work are ingenious and captivating.

Despite being released in 2006 this movie has more relevance than ever before and eerily resembles much of what is happening today and the debates, disputes and conflicts now dominating many Western countries. Overall the film was relatively well made and the action sequences intense and the acting performances were excellent.

A sophisticated gem, with an intelligent original script. This was the best picture in 2006, but strangely, it got overlook during the award season. It didn't even get a nomination.
