It has that distinctly English atmosphere, with elegant settings, sharp dialogue, and a slow-building sense of tension that keeps you interested throughout. What I liked most was the film’s mood and presentation. The performances feel polished, the story is handled with care, and the whole production has a refined UK feel that suits the material perfectly. It is the kind of film that makes you pay attention without needing big action or flashy effects. Overall, I would rate Crooked House 7/10. It is a well-made, engaging film with a very good British identity, and it is worth watching for anyone who enjoys intelligent mystery dramas. See more Ted B @Movieaddicted Sep 19 3.5 stars; The longer I watched this film, the more it seemed like I was watching "Knives Out". I initially thought it was a rip-off of the original, but that couldn't be because it came before. Hmm. A little research revealed that the rip-off is actually "Knives Out". It turns out that Rian Johnson, producer/director, was so enamored with the Agatha Christie novel that he wrote a screenplay ("Knives Out") based on the story. The screenplay was converted into a novel, and the rest is history. "Knives Out" I think is somewhat superior, but Johnson had the advantage of an already clever story to work from. After reading all of that backstory, I tend to like the film more. Both films used good established actors/actresses which gave the film some depth. Anything with Glenn Close is absolutely worth watching, but here a fantastic ensemble cast, led by Max Irons — whom I find to be sublime, a perfect cinematic leading man, who can act with the hair on the back of his neck, a subtle flutter of the fingers, a slightly sloppy collar — yet never oversteps the limits of exquisite thespian taste — delivers a rollicking, chilling, disturbing, distressing, fascinating psychological study of a disturbed family. Think "Five Little Pigs" meets "Downton Abbey," sort of. Fantastic soundtrack & a really intelligent cinematographic direction over richly textured interiors, as well as grounds & city settings, everything thought through to perfection. I watched this in 2025, when the meaning of "oligarchy" resonates even more deeply than in 2017 when this magnificent psychological thriller came out. If you enjoyed "Knives Out!" with Daniel Craig, you must watch this far more serious & ultimately much more satisfying exploration of the same themes, as examined by the lively imagination of Agatha Christie in one of her last & undeniably one of her finest mystery novels. This is the perfect film to watch with someone; while the subject is shocking & even distressing, it is all very well done, without resorting to gratuitous gore or smarmy romantic slop. All the more convincing, as a direct result. "Crooked House" really gets under your skin and stays in your head, raising even more questions than it answers.
