Al Pacino at his gritty best, albeit some storyline flaws, holds our attention. Annette Bening’s character steps out of the “adoring fan” stereotype sticking to her guns: “dinner with Danny?” No! No! No!

I honestly did not expect this movie to hit the way it did. After a streak of pretty mediocre films from Pacino, I almost skipped it completely. But the plot sounded just interesting enough to give it a chance, and that decision paid off big time. This turns out to be one of his strongest performances in years. Danny Collins is a burned-out, over-the-top rock star who has spent decades drowning in fame, excess, and bad choices. Then one unexpected event forces him to actually stop and look at the mess he’s made of his life. Instead of doubling down, he chooses to change. That decision sends him on an emotional journey to fix broken relationships and become a better person. It is not perfect, it is not easy, and that is exactly why it feels real. The movie pulls you in from the very beginning and holds your attention all the way to the credits. It is honest, funny in places, and surprisingly touching.

I am always curious to see how Pacino delivers in a role that was really not intended for a man of his acting stature. This flick is enjoyable but nothing to ogle over....decent background kind of flick and apparently Pacino used to sing a Ryan Adams tune non-stop on the set.
