Critics Consensus

The movie works when things are on fire, but everything else - from dialogue to characters - is scathingly bad.

The new movie Dante's Peak displays all the elements of the classic Hollywood disaster flick, circa 1975 Irwin Allen (with stomach-turning dialogue to match).

The volcano’s eruption and its aftermath are the obvious draws here, excitingly realized through effects supervisor Patrick McClung’s measured combination of miniature photography and judicious CGI.

An uneven but watchable disaster film that leans more on spectacle than strong storytelling.

MEH went on too long. It’s fiction; no?

I’m so surprised this film has such a low rating. It was one of my favorite action flicks in the 90s and still has my heart. Pierce Bronson is dreamy as ever and the movie keeps me on the edge of my seat.

I'm stunned at the rating this film gets. It's honestly my favorite disaster movie. The story is good, the chemistry of Brosnan and Hamilton is outstanding, and the acting is excellent as well. I don't get how some reviews of this film say the plot/story is poor. What's poor about it? Its got a quiet little town, with a HUGE problem underneath them. The characters are believable, and the action is good. The effects *might be* the only area where there could be some improvement. But thats because it was an odd time for effects. Everyone was trying CGI, which was not great at that point, and expensive...so this film uses some CGI, but relies on practical effects to do the heavy lifting. And they're really good, but noticeable. While I dont consider this a 10/10, I would give it a solid 8/10. BUT, I'm gonna give it a 10 to offset some of the f***ed up ratings/reviews on this site.

Absolute classic, such a great disaster flic. The effects are amazing for 97', it's James Bond and Sarah Connor legging it from a massive volcano what more do you want 😀🍿
