Sonny Weaver Jr. is the general manager of the Cleveland Browns. One of pro football's most important days, NFL draft day, is drawing near, but Sonny has much more on his mind than just which players to recruit. His lover is pregnant, and the team's owner wants to fire him. After Sonny accepts a deal with Seattle that nets him that team's first-round pick, he immediately wonders if he has made the right choice for himself and the Browns.

Critics Consensus

It's perfectly pleasant for sports buffs and Costner fans, but overall, Draft Day lives down to its title by relying too heavily on the sort of by-the-numbers storytelling that only a statistician could love.

I know the industry criticizes this movie because "it could never happen"! But if you let yourself suspend some belief it becomes a fun, entertaining movie that makes you wish it could happen. It's a feel good movie that is somewhat underrated.

Possibly the dumbest script of any sports movie in history: "I want all my number one picks back plus I want punter David Putney." The fact that you traded three number one picks for one was eye rolling enough but now you want those picks back and a punter? It's the perfect dumb movie for Kevin Costner and Dennis Leary, who are both surprisingly good by the way. All the actors are good it's just the dumbest fictional sports story.

One of my favorite movies centered around football. The story/plot is what makes it so good. It's like Devine intervention was there all along. Plus a pretty awesome and large cast of people that actually fit their part. Sorry to be so corny.

I’m not the biggest fan of Kevin Costner, but I do enjoy an all-star cast, and this movie appeared to have it in spades with great men and women from film and TV. Plus, a movie about the comings and goings of the NFL draft season does make for a cool story if it is told right and I was ready to watch. I like football but I’m not the most observant in the comings and goings of the sport, but this was pretty cool. Costner was fine, but its everyone else that does a great job in making this movie work. Jennifer Garner, Dennis Leary, Frank Langella, Ellen Burnstyn, and so many others make this movie so well.
