rex W @RT11010153 6h The first 20 minutes rank as one of the best movie openings of all time. The movie slows down after that. But it is never boring. This could have been a classic. The production is outstanding. However, I'm not quite sure what they could have done differently, or better. Maybe the subject matter is just too depressing. See more Chris S @Janomi 4d Enemy at the Gates is a really solid war thriller because the sniper-duel premise gives the massive Battle of Stalingrad a focused, suspenseful center. The cat-and-mouse battle between Vasily Zaitsev and Major König is built on patience, fear, deception, and survival, where every movement could be fatal. Jude Law gives Vasily a strong mix of humility, skill, and quiet pressure. He feels like a young soldier who becomes a symbol before he fully understands the cost. Ed Harris is excellent as König, bringing calm, intelligence, and controlled menace without turning him into a cartoon villain. The Stalingrad atmosphere is grim and effective, full of rubble, smoke, cold, mud, broken buildings, and constant death. The opening battle sequence is especially overwhelming. Some of the history is simplified into a cleaner hero-villain structure, but Enemy at the Gates is tense, atmospheric, and very effective. I liked this movie because it is based on true events and in the life of Vasily Zaitsev. The plot was very interesting and the direction which was made by Jean-Jacques Annaud was very good. Since its plot is based on true events makes it even more interesting while we watch what was happening in Stalingrad during World War II. The interpretations of both Jude Law who played as Vasily Zaitsev and Ed Harris who played as Major König were simply outstanding. Some other interpretations that have to be mentioned were Joseph Fiennes' who played as Commisar Danilov and Rachel Weisz's who played as Tania Chernova. To sum up, I have to say that "Enemy at the Gates" is a nice, interesting movie and I highly recommend everyone to watch it because I am sure that you will enjoy it even if you are not a fan of war movies. Every time I thought that it couldn’t get any worse, it immediately proved me wrong. It also includes a troublingly odd sex scene.
