Critics Consensus

Despite a strong opening that promises sci-fi thrills, Event Horizon quickly devolves into an exercise of style over substance whose flashy effects and gratuitous gore fail to mask its overreliance on horror clichés.

I want to like Event Horizon; it just doesn’t do a damn thing for me except remind me of a bunch of actually good things that were probably going through Paul Anderson’s dull head while he was creating this.

Event Horizon is sci fi horror at its best. Movies like this and Alien that answer the question, what's out there? In a delightfully horrifying way. Cast is solid, story is solid even with its 90s cheese but that just adds to the vibe. Still holds up in 2025, a must watch for the horror genre.

This is the kind of movie that is a test to determine if you love movies or if you’re a pinhead pretending to know what you are talking about. Further proof that the golden age of filmmaking is long behind us

Event Horizon feels like Alien, Hellraiser and Lovecraft thrown into deep space, but its greatest strength is what it doesn't show us. A ship disappears from our universe and returns seven years later. Its crew is dead, something happened to them beyond our dimension, but we never really learn what they found there. Hell? Another reality? Something the human mind simply cannot understand? Ironically, the studio cuts may have made that mystery even stronger. Much of Anderson's original footage is believed to be lost, leaving us to imagine what his complete film looked like. Beneath the gore is a wonderfully simple idea: humanity found a locked door and, instead of asking why it was locked, built a key. Event Horizon is flawed, but almost thirty years later its mystery still works. Sometimes what we don't see is far more frightening than what we do.

Genuinely disturbing and well acted. A very clever and off the wall idea I'm not sure why this one isn't more popular. It's a very different kind of sci-fi / horror - far more horror than sci-fi of course - and it's well worth a watch. As others have reported, apparently the most shocking bits were edited out and no uncut version remains; maybe just as well, considering what's in there.
