Now and then, you find a film that speaks to you on such a deeply personal level that I don't know whether I should be genuinely concerned about how much I resonated with Falling Down, managing to turn one man's descent toward the abyss into a wickedly mischievous thriller. A hostile study of the growing resentment toward modern life, the breakdown of a fragile crusader is downright suspenseful if not wryly witty in its caustic conception, an anti-Odyssey story about the lie of the American Dream. Coupled with a fantastic supporting performance from Robert Duvall and James Newton Howard's incredible music, Falling Down remains an utterly gripping psychological thriller, offering insight into urban decay, social discontent and personal responsibility replete with just enough gallows humour, to the point where it could have been a black comedy, giving cause to consider the line, so easily crossed, between social function and disastrous personal undoing. Michael Douglas starred in "Falling Down" (1993), a good thriller about a desperate and a bit of unstable man caught in a desperate world, until the braking point makes him grab a weapon and unleash his rage on streets. If that premise sounds like a clear social commentary, well then it is - it is written all over it. I liked this movie back in the day and I liked it as much in 2026 upon revisiting it on newly released 4K remaster. Michael Douglas and Robert Duvall both are excellent here and directing by Joel Schumacher bring a lot to this simple story. The city itself is represented like hell itself and a man tries to get through it to home. Overall, at its running time 1 h 48 min this is a solidly paced movie and the good premise is executed great as well. Good movie in every way. An incredible cinematic exploration of the psychological effects of urban society and American apathy. Better cop side than I expected, all the clips of the movie are based around the insane acts of the main character, but the main cop had some decent story as well. Overall great acting.
