The Gheorghius, a devout Romanian Norwegian couple, resettle in a village set in a distant fjord where they become close to their neighbors, the Halbergs. Their children bond despite their different education. When adolescent Elia Gheorghiu shows up at school with some bruises on her body, the community asks itself if the traditional education that the Gheorghiu children get from their parents would have anything to do with it.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Presenting a knotty moral dilemma and refusing to provide easy answers, Cristian Mungiu's superbly well-acted Fjord has a chilly surface that belies a heated humanity beneath the frost.

Fjord may not have the harrowing power of the director’s very best work, but it’s an exacting study of a contemporary social issue that’s rigorous without being clinical. Go to Full Review

Certainly, Mungui is such a skilled director that he could easily tell you who to root for and exactly when you should feel good about standing up and cheering. But he would rather leave you twisting a bit in the wind. Go to Full Review

Few films provide as much to think about, to argue about, to be impassioned about. Fjord is breathtaking cinema in more ways than one, both urgent filmmaking and a profound comment on our times. Go to Full Review

For Renata Reinsve and Sebastian Stan, these are stellar performances displaying their capacity to fully disappear in their roles. Go to Full Review

The parents desperately want their children back, yet they must constantly weigh every word, every reaction, and every expression of disagreement against the possibility that the authorities might use it against them. They are trapped between the instinct to fight for what they believe is best for their children and the terrifying realization that standing up for themselves might cost them the very children they are trying to protect. The tension is relentless, yet it rarely needs to be expressed through dramatic gestures. It exists in conversations, silences, expressions, and the constant awareness that one wrong word might have irreversible consequences. Equally disturbing is the film's portrayal of institutional cruelty. People do not necessarily have to be malicious to inflict tremendous suffering. They convinced of their own righteousness, and yet profoundly indifferent to the pain their decisions cause.
