Dave K @BilboBagsy 2d Daniel Day Lewis plays one of the most memorable characters I have ever seen. His portrayal of Bill Cutting (Based on William Poole) is one of the most formidable and terrifying personalities ever put to the screen. Daniel is a magnetic force of nature and his towering presence just captivates you in every scene he is in. It's actually so intimidating that it feels like every other character is trapped in his presence and absolutely no one in the film escapes the man's wrath. Daniel’s character has class and etiquette but at the same time he is one of the most brutal and cruel individuals ever scripted. His calm and charismatic mannerisms paired with this brutal ambition to rule New York is for me one of the most inspiring performances in my lifetime, and it will always stick in my head as a masterclass example of acting. It's not a perfect film. I actually think it's best described as a flawed masterpiece, but It's a truly immersive experience of 1850’s New York. 8 / 10 See more Josh G @Parsifal83 Jul 31 An ambitious but uneven historical epic that falls short of Scorsese's best work. It's overlong, several scenes and stylistic choices haven't aged particularly well, and not every performance lands. Great story, great writing and great performances by Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day Lewis. But having a big buildup and then no actual battle at the end was very anticlimactic. There is no narrative except for one minimal thing, which on a scale of one to ten in how intriguing it is, is about a 1.5. Tedious, ultraviolent for violence's sake, i.e., gratuitous, no story and no point. Strong shooting, acting and production, that's why the one star, Otherwise, it's zero. Like I had hopes it would change the ending from what I expected, but instead it just drug it on for 2.5hrs. And while its somewhat history, nothing about it gave enough real history to feel like a telling of the past. Like I expect the feeling we are expected to walk away with is, "Life is bigger than your rivalry and while some things might feel important in the moment, you have to pay attention to your community or it could all go to shit." Cause the ending gives that vibe of like, wtf was the point of any of it. And for a movie so highly acclaimed I very much dislike the ending/pointlessness that felt like the films end came with. And while the rivalry existed I actually felt like the story suggested more that there was no rivalry and both parties just kind of stole banners to hide their intentions under.
