See more Doug G 04/03/2024 This movie belongs to the year 1969. Without that perspective, I doubt most people today would find any value in it. I think of the TV series "Three's Company," which came along about ten years later, and I can see a similar set of attitudes and stereotypes played out on the screen. Honestly, by today's standards, this film is full of cliches and stereotypes that don't work today. However, if I go back to where I was in 1969 - still in the closet and not yet ten years old - I imagine this movie would have pushed a lot of envelopes and is a reasonably accurate reflection of attitudes and opinions of the day. The movie, I felt, was very predictable and, like Three's Company a decade later, relied a lot on some pretty over-the-top stereotypes and attitudes to make you laugh. But I didn't dislike it, and it was a fun trip down memory lane for me. See more Robert N 03/29/2023 While this is certainly no Oscar winner , its nowhere as bad as all the reviews. While CERTAINLY a weird, gay VETY SPECIFIC time capsuleit also hits upon (albeit it weirdly) about current topics still not fully settled to this day! Surely no GREAT but also worth watching. See more Joel K 09/15/2020 I saw this pic in 1969 during the original release. I was struggling to come out after several frustrating years. The Vietnam war and draft was in full mode so the premise appeared to be cutsie. An investigator was following this straight guy who was trying to avoid the draft. They had a scene in a LA drag bar and I got freaked out because of the depiction of the people who were in the bar. I knew that was not me. Fortunately, I got over that psychological trauma and the following year moved to San Francisco because if I couldn't come out there, I would probably never be able to do so. This Halloween 2020 I will celebrate my 50th anniversary of coming out and having an enjoyable, productive life as a well adjusted gay man. To be fully truthful, I don't have the legs to do drag! ;-) See more 08/13/2020 still a funny movie. some may find it over the top or insulting. i laughed all the way through. See more 05/19/2020 A fun comedy that's not entirely harmless. I'm not sure if the main characters continuing to drop "f" bombs and refer to being not-gay as "being normal" was intentionally included so we don't actually like the main characters (they are rich white dudes dodging the Vietnam draft). The charm mostly comes from the over the top landlord and his husband, who both had a heart of gold and didn't seem to care one way or another if the leads were gay. It has a few funny moments, but overall the message is an ugly and problematic one about drawing the line between straight people and gay people and keeping them societally separate.
