Teenage Rachel (Lindsay Lohan) is a real thorn in the side of her mother, Lilly (Felicity Huffman). More than just rebellious, she is incorrigible. After Rachel crashes a car, Lilly decides to haul the girl off to a place to which she vowed never to return: Her own mother's (Jane Fonda) Idaho home. Georgia, the family matriarch, lives by a strict code and expects all under her roof to do the same. Given structure and purpose, Rachel's anger at the world begins to subside.

Critics Consensus

Comedic and dramatic in all the wrong places, Georgia Rule is a confused dramedy that wastes the talents of its fine cast.

The confused script trades in such heavy topics as alcoholism and child sexual abuse, but every dramatic scene plays like one of those schmaltzy Happy Days moments that inevitably drew a big 'Awwwwww!' from the studio audience. Go to Full Review Rex Reed Observer May 16, 2007
Time for a new book by Jane Fonda, and this time I expect a full chapter on how she got snookered into doing Georgia Rule. Go to Full Review Keith Phipps AV Club May 12, 2007

Director Garry Marshall has too much confidence that he can match the weighty issues here with the light comedy. He can't. Or at least he can't with this cast. Go to Full Review James Croot The Post NZ Aug 11, 2022

Robert P @Superbad 3 days ago Georgia Rule is a 2.5 star Movie! See more Harper D @RT94655283 Sep 14, 2026 pretty good! its another heartbreaking movie but its more tame due to the comedy added lol! good watch to add to my list See more Maxsuel S @Maxine191 Aug 30, 2026 Ela é a Poderosa foi uma experiência interessante, principalmente pela atuação de Lindsay Lohan, que demonstra sua versatilidade em um papel mais dramático e sério. It portrays accurately how someone that has dealt with abuse acts. As someone who had dealt with it first hand I should know. So why are the reviews on here so awful? I couldn't tell you. It never tried to be a comedy in any way shape or form. Instead it brought the heaviness it needed to the film while trying to be light so that we could understand how each of the main three girls came to be. If you don't understand why this is a great film then you didn't actually watch it. It really deserves better ratings and more people watching it. I 100% recommend it if you are looking for a movie that deals with life struggles and accurately depicts how people deal with those struggles.
