Gillian W @JaneErrrr May 17 Oh dear, it probably wasn't a good idea to watch this movie less than a week after being totally drawn in and gripped by the novel. But the ratings and reviews were pretty good. I almost wonder if those producing the film had bothered to read the actual book. More like they speed read a synopsis to pass an exam. Well, in my view they didn't pass the exam. There were gaping holes in the story, and the characters were never developed. Probably ok to watch if you haven't read the book, but if you only watch the film you won't really know the whole story. My advice is forget the film and read the book. I found it a little slow to start, but once Jane leaves school and meets Mr Rochester I couldn't put it down. Atmospheric visually and binaurally. I can go on and on about the director. Would be a 4.5 or higher if title character was cast differently and/or truer to the original character…considering Jane Eyre is one of the best written/ fully-developed characters in the history of the genre. Oh b/c and it’s the title of the ding dang film. So it goes. All in all it’s a very worthy film. Pulls you in. Stays with you. Anf that’s what good film is supposed to do; take you on a journey in another world in a creative and emotionally exciting manner. The Jane played here was so unbelievably drab, unimaginative, shallow, that it hurt my eyes just to watch her, and for God's sake what's up with Hollywood and tall bodies? Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester are both on the shorter side, especially for Jane it is soo important: She is supposed to be "plain, obscure, poor and little"! The script just barely tried to catch some important scenes from the novel and Rochester was played magnificently well and I was almost sold, even if it didn't look like him, but the big, unseemly blot on the whole movie was the horrid casting of the heroine herself. Can't believe I paid the money to buy this. It wasn't even worth the rent. See more lovely A @username920 Aug 15 It's a very visually stunning film, but it lacks everything else. Having read the book, I liked how some passages were adapted, but a lot of the bigger scenes and plotlines were ignored or poorly done. The story feels rushed thus resulting in a lack of chemistry between the main characters. The book is very long, so it is difficult to adapt into a 2 hour film. But still, I think it could have been done better. The actors were great though, just not the best script or direction. See more Read all reviews
