Alain E @AlainE Oct 29 Acting and cinematography are first class. The length of the movie is totally unjustified. Yes, it takes time to make a painting. Similarly to write a book or make a sculpture. By these metrics, a movie about Rodin would have a duration of thirty days. Much better movies have an approval rate of 70 or 80 percent as opposed to one hundred here. Unless the critics want to show us that they totally get a “difficult “ movie by a famous director. Nice restoration on the Cohen channel. See more Kate H May 24 The acting & casting is perfect. I love long, lingering movies. I am an artist & a poet. AND a fan of all of the literary works cited as inspiration--James, Balzac, Wilde--so Why didn't this do it for me? yes--a deep look at the model/artist relationship--down to the smallest details --the scene where F. arranges his pens, clears the space off surfaces, while Marianne waits -- as if she doesn't exist--is brilliant--but like many of the scene (sorry) just goes on too long. I HATED the sound of that scratching pen! I wanted him to be working in oils :) I am someone who enjoyed "Giovanni Fabulouso" -- which my partner at Venice film Festival thought was as riveting as paint drying-- but there the film-maker captured the still ness in the creative process-- the daydreaming that is the gestation--without boring us to tears. or me anyway. All I can think is that Beart's flawless beauty mesmerized all those male critics. Worth sitting through the other 3 hours for an hours worth of her nudity--. See more Tic Toc M 05/22/2023 This movie is not for everybody. If you're not an artist, or interested in the artist's process, I wouldn't touch this movie with a ten foot pole. If you are an artist, you may (or may not) like this. It is four hours.......and this movie is basically about a guy trying to make a painting. Stroke by excruciating stroke. His model (Emmanuelle Beart) spends much of the movie bored out of her mind as he works, and you might be as well. That said: I watched the entire four hour movie in one sitting, which is pretty shocking for me. Days later, it's still in my mind. Excellent acting. Beart's performance is particularly impeccable.
