Once a first-rate Secret Service agent, Joe Hallenbeck (Bruce Willis) is now a gruff private investigator whose latest gig is protecting a pole dancer (Halle Berry). When she's murdered, he grudgingly teams up with her boyfriend, Jimmy Dix (Damon Wayans), an ex-quarterback with a gambling problem, and the two go after her killers. Before long, they stumble onto a plot by a well-known football magnate (Noble Willingham) to bribe federal legislators into legalizing sports gambling.

Critics Consensus

The Last Boy Scout is as explosive, silly, and fun as it does represent the decline of the buddy-cop genre.

Of course, a Shane Black script helmed by Tony Scott as he was just entering his prime is first and foremost a work of popcorn entertainment. Go to Full Review Michael Wilmington Los Angeles Times Aug 4, 2023

When automobiles are not crashing, going over embankments or being blown up (the film's favorite mode of distressing a car), someone falls atop the rotors of a helicopter in mid-air. The body count is high. Go to Full Review Douglas Davidson Elements of Madness 1 day ago

…whatever else they felt about him, the public couldn’t get enough of Bruce Willis in action-man mode….The Last Boy Scout is a guilty pleasure of a film, rude, aggressive, ugly and a whole lot of fun to watch if you’re fed up with PC-fare…. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

A P @FilmFan4547 3 days ago Classic ‘90s Shane Black/Tony Scott actioner with great one-liners from Bruce Willis & Damon Wayans throughout. Always a good time! See more Nathan Y @NathanYatesDouglass Aug 6, 2026 What a mess. Convoluted doesn’t come close. This is just a very stupid movie. See more Cornelious S. @Bobilla3 Jul 8, 2026 Excellent, magnificent comedy Thrill action drama movie See more Chris S @Janomi Jul 6, 2026 The Last Boy Scout is a sharp, fast, highly entertaining action comedy built around Bruce Willis in full antihero mode. As Joe Hallenbeck, Willis is bitter, exhausted, beaten down, and still dangerous, using dry humor and weary cynicism to give the movie most of its personality. Damon Wayans makes a strong mismatched partner, a washed-up football player whose hostile dynamic with Hallenbeck slowly turns into one of the film’s biggest strengths. The screenplay is packed with hard-boiled one-liners, buddy-cop banter, pulp violence, and noir attitude. Tony Scott gives the movie an aggressive early 90s style that makes it feel bigger than the plot probably deserves. The conspiracy involving football, gambling, politics, and crime is ridiculous and messy, and the tone can be harshly cynical. Still, it is very entertaining if you are on its wavelength. See more thiago S @Thiagostone May 10, 2026 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Read all reviews
