Her new single might be called "Spooky Action" but despite a few gory moments, there’s not much spooky action to be found in the film as a whole. Go to Full Review

Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel are dynamite in a pop rock opera from director David Lowery that wins points for visuals and suffers from a terminal case of grandiosity Go to Full Review

The painfully literal ending struck me as a somewhat risible disappointment, and though I admired the movie’s imagination and ambition, I can’t say I ever entered wholeheartedly into its story. Go to Full Review

Lowery's psychodrama soap opera may bite off more than it can metaphorically chew, but a wounded, glowering Michaela Cole elevates this moody, melancholic expiation beyond the confines of glittery pop-icon artifice. Go to Full Review

Hathaway is captivating to watch and, much like her Mother Mary persona, we get to see just how the marriage between the two works. And it is glorious. Go to Full Review

Patrick 9h Apparently, David Lowery came up with this story since he felt he was losing connection to his art while making a Disney film. It shows. Lowery puts his all into this, for better or worse. I love the first 45 minutes of this. It’s almost all dialogue, in a single location. Anne Hathaway is very good in this, don't get me wrong, but it’s Michaela Coel who is not only the best actor in the movie but also gives maybe the best performance I've seen so far this year. I loved everything about her performance, and my word, her narration delivery is something else. And, it's when the two of them are sharing scenes that this movie shines the most. At a certain point, though, Lowery reminds us that this is a movie, not a stage play, so he goes all out with Mother Mary. It’s an existential, engrossing, mesmerizing story execution that drifts through the narrative so elegantly that it’s hypnotic. But at this point, the shift from literal to somewhat abstract feels a little at odds with what comes before, rather than organic and purposefully woven into it. Still, is it immaculate on a sensory level, though? Absolutely. The cinematography, costume design, editing (for the most part), score (Daniel Hart, we don't deserve you), and sound design are excellent. And I got a pretty good idea of what it was going for, but I can't deny that it wasn’t as compelling as before. And I could tell this was a tough pill to swallow for much of the audience around me. Maybe it will mesh better on a rewatch. Who knows? But either way, even if the second half is weaker than the first, I do recommend it for the filmmaking and Michaela Coel’s performance alone.
