An aging James Bond (Sean Connery) makes an uncharacteristic mistake during a routine training mission, leading M (Edward Fox) to believe that the legendary British Intelligence spy is now past his prime. M indefinitely suspends Bond from active duty. However, when SPECTRE member Fatima Bush (Barbara Carrera) and her fellow terrorists successfully steal two nuclear missiles from the U.S. military, M must reinstate Bond, as he is the only agent who can beat SPECTRE at their own game of espionage.

Critics Consensus

While the rehashed story feels rather uninspired and unnecessary, the return of both Sean Connery and a more understated Bond make Never Say Never Again a watchable retread.

[Connery] does at least handle the whole charade, a retread of Thunderball, with a pleasing sense of irony as he reacquaints himself with old adversary Blofeld (Von Sydow) and thwarts SPECTRE's plans.

Connery was famously reluctant to play Bond towards the end of his tenure, but its incredible how quickly a big fat pay check can change a persons mind. Never Say Never Again was, to my surprise, far better than I’d been led to believe. Yes, the budget shortcomings are obvious in the editing, the fight choreography and the inconsistent cinematography, legends like Max Von Sydow are completely wasted on point roles and the central storyline about the stolen nuclear warheads is pushed to the background for most of the runtime. But Connery is clearly more invested this time round, the Bond girls are given a lot more to do than usual and it manages to be meta about the age of its lead without becoming grating or obnoxious. It might be seen as an outlier in the series, but that doesn’t mean its not enjoyable.

Il ritorno alle origini con Sean Connery è un colpo al cuore, anche se fa male vedere che l'attore non è affiancato dai soliti volti noti a causa della "non originalità" del progetto. La sceneggiatura non è di grande valore e non mostra originalità; spicca in negativo la sequenza della fuga a cavallo dalla rocca, che mostra una CGI a dir poco terribile; mentre spicca in positivo l'ultima buona sequenza sotterranea. Film che finisce per essere una specie di prequel di cui non si sentiva particolare necessità.

I guess it's fun that Connery came back (and they do acknowledge his age here effectively) but it's rather dull frankly and even accidentally becoming a parody of itself on occasion. Mostly feels like the only justification for this was they could remake "Thunderball" because of a weird legal loophole and didn't think beyond that. Probably for the best this offshoot series died here.
