From the producers of MINARI and MOONLIGHT comes the next great coming-of-age journey. Fourteen-year-old Olmo and his family are struggling to make ends meet in 1979 New Mexico. Due to an illness that keeps his father Nestor confined to his bed, his mother Cecilia, his sister Ana, and even he himself must contribute to the daily caretaking responsibilities. Olmo, in the throes of selfish adolescence, would much rather hang out with his best friend Miguel and try to impress his beautiful next-door neighbor Nina than take care of his dad. And when Nina finally invites him to a party on the day that he's been left alone with his dad, Olmo will do whatever he can to get out of his duties, embarking on a journey of mischief and chaos. In his desperate attempt to escape his home life, he will come to realize that the place of his deepest pain is also where he will find solace: with his family.

I didn't just watch Olmo. I recognized it! As a Mexican American film producer, I teared up within the first framers because I felt SEEN. Here was a Mexican American family simply living everyday life. Seeing that familiar on the big screen was extraordinary for me. Every frame is a visual treat! The cinematography, framing, production design, costumes and music are fantastic. A few pacing lags and an abrupt cut to credits didn't detract. Then I saw a family, three adults, and two kids, who might have been Latino, watching together and eating popcorn. I teared up again, suddenly aware of the importance of this moment. THIS is why filmmakers make movies. You don't' have to be Mexican American to connect with Olmo. I hope audiences of every background show up for films that let us see ourselves and each other more fully. Go see it. Bring your family. Buy the popcorn. Fill the theaters. If we want more stories from more cultures, we have to show up for them.

Coming of age story in the vein of the movie 10 years ago called "eigth grade"..About a Mexican 14 yr old boy who despite the challenges of taking care of his invalid father has nothing much else challenging going on in his life. The only saving grace was it was a short movie as I couldn't have suffered thru much more of his pedestrian life. Final grade: C despite the rotten tomatoes 100% score which is a farce.

Synopsis
