Steelworker Russell Baze works a dead-end job and holds tight to his sense of family, duty and loyalty. Rodney Baze, Russell's brother, returns home after serving in Iraq and, with his debts piling up, becomes entangled with a vicious crime lord. Soon afterward, Rodney disappears mysteriously. Great film. What really stood out to me was Woody Harrelson’s performance. He completely committed to the role, bringing such a raw, gritty intensity that you feel every scene he’s in. He’s an incredibly talented actor, and this is one of those performances that reminds you just how powerful he can be. I also loved the bond between the two good-hearted brothers. It’s very much an “against the world” story, and while they’re not looking for trouble, they just happen to be the last two people anyone should choose to mess with. Their loyalty to each other gives the film its emotional weight, making the action and drama hit even harder.

Out of the Furnace (2013) is one of those films that leaves a lasting impression because of how heavy and unsettling it feels from start to finish. It’s not "disturbing" in a flashy or horror sense, but in a grounded, realistic way that makes it hit harder than expected. The atmosphere is bleak, the tone is serious throughout, and the performances really sell the emotional weight of the story. What makes it stand out is how unforgiving it feels. The film doesn’t offer easy comfort or clean resolutions, and that sense of consequence and loss hangs over every decision the characters make. It’s a slow burn, but it builds tension in a very natural, almost uncomfortable way. Overall, it’s a well-acted and intense drama that sticks with you long after it ends. Not an easy watch, but a powerful one. 7/10
