I would definitely recommend giving it a go if you haven’t already See more Sage M @sageism Feb 14 This movie was relatable as an older sibling, who is trying to just move through life and settle down, watching their younger sibling slowly self-destruct. This movie covers so much ground, with so many lessons. It does move at a slower pace but if you slow down with it, it seems to fly by. Woody Harrelson and Willam Dafoe are goated as usual. I actually found Christian Bale and Casey Affleck's acting and storylines to be deep and well-detailed, and Zoe Saldana broke my heart over and over again. See more dimitrios o @RT22908417 Oct 6 The stellar cast drew me to this movie, and it started off on the right foot with the right look, attitude, and sound for what it wanted to evoke. It is VERY earnest, never allows itself to get exploitational (well, it does in the bareknuckle fights scenes) and clearly wants to pay homage to sense of place. But for a character piece it relies on dramatic plots points, such as the early incident that sends the protagonist to jail (an unnecessary plot point, I might add). Then as things go on I found myself asking more and more why such and such just happened, so my attention was being held back as the plot thickened, causing further confusion. This is where the whole "Deer Hunter" grandiosity kinda stumbled. One wishes it has been kept simple and clean plot-wise, it could have been much more effective. As it is, I lost patience by the end. But I might add that if you are a Willem Dafoe fan, this is another one of his great supporting character roles that is well-worth watching. While it's a depressing story, it's also chock full of actor's actors and therefore engrossing.
