Clay B. @cbrown157 May 31 Please Stand By is a unique coming-of-age story with solid representation for those on the autism spectrum. Portraying autism in movies and TV shows isn’t something I feel is always well done, but Dakota Fanning does a great job with this one. The parallels of Spock from Star Trek (and briefly the elderly) and people on the autism spectrum help, to me, neurotypical minds understand how someone on the spectrum may feel. The story beats all feel believable and hit at a consistent pace while serving the overall themes well. The only part of this movie I do not like is the performance and overall story arc for Audrey (Alice Eve), Wendy’s sister. The acting falls flat and the character does too; at no point am I convinced that Audrey cares about Wendy outside of her own selfish purposes. The storyline split detracts from the experience. Overall, probably not a rewatch in the near future, but a fun story nonetheless. DF truly delivers an emotive, captivating, and compelling account of an autistic teenager, including the trials and triumphs of assimilation in a world that daunts and confounds as much as it pleases and enables. The supporting performances might not be scripted as the strongest, but the actors deliver well. It shows the challenges she faces and her resilience in overcoming them. It reminds me a bit of the book - The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time.
