A tale of terror when a group of asbestos removal workers start work in an abandoned insane asylum. The complex of buildings looms up out of the woods like a dormant beast. Grand, imposing, abandoned, deteriorating. The residents of Danvers, Massachusetts, steer well clear of the place. But Danvers State Mental Hospital, closed down for 15 years, is about to receive five new visitors.

Critics Consensus

Relying more on atmosphere than gore, Session 9 is effectively creepy.

The movie's misplaced psychological emphasis is matched by its stubble-scraping visual style.

The story doesn't quite pay off, characters are underwritten and the surprise ending is contrived and unconvincing.

The lo-fi aesthetic make it feel less like a movie and more like a reality show, emphasizing the methodical descent into madness experience by the characters, while the running voiceovers will send chills down your spine.

Session 9 leaps from slow-burn unease—you know something is festering, but you can’t quite put your finger on it—to a rapid-fire gorefest in which everything you’ve just seen is thoroughly explained.

It's creepy as hell and a true horror movie, but you probably have to watch it twice to understand what is going on, the plot is so confusing.

Might be the actual worst movie I've ever seen. Nothing happens, couldn't even finish it. 1h+ and only 1 scary thing and it was a screamer! ASS

I like to say this is the thinking man's movie. You can take away so much I've had so many discussions about it what Simon really was was it just in Gordon's head, or was it a malevolent spirit. It also had some really great actors in it and the film where they filmed it at Danvers state mental hospital was just a stunning building..

Session 9 had a group of great actors who played their roles in the movie very well. This was important because their personalities really tied into the story of which you'll piece together when you watch. Not much of a jump scare movie, but rather a psychological thriller that has you questioning the different character's roles throughout. Small pieces of information throughout the movie all come together in the end to make you think you reached a conclusion on what really happened, but really, it's open for the viewers interpretation.
