(Including the infamous "I'm not crazy M'Lynn. I've just been in a very bad mood for 45 years"...) As we watch town matriarch M'Lynn Eatonton and her four best friends steer through life's challenges: namely, her daughter's marriage, childbirth, diabetes, and the tragic aftermath... In Chinquapin Louisiana in the late 80s...And it's based loosely on events from writer Robert Harling's life.... And I definitely liked the exchange about death...("I just wanna hit someone and hit them hard". "Here M'Lynn, hit this!")... And the rapport between the beauty shop chums is infectious...Overall this is an effective piece of performative 80s cheese, wrapped in Southern Charm. However, after watching it, I can say this movie really is for everyone. It is a heartfelt and funny story about friendship. The story starts out light, and there are countless zingers and comments that made me laugh. I do feel it completely shifts tonally int he second half but ultimately packs an emotional punch. Overall, it is most definitely a melodramatic film with a lot of cheesy elements, but it is so effortlessly likable and sincere, I am doubtful most will be able to resist its charms.
