Five years after the Civil War, freedwoman and former Buffalo Soldier Moses "Mo" Washington travels west to lay claim on a gold mine- the summation of years of toil for Mo and her community. It is a mean, dangerous world for an unaccompanied Black woman in 1870 America and so Mo travels into the deep frontier disguised as a man. After her stagecoach is ambushed by a group of murderous thieves, Mo is forced to hold legendary outlaw Tommy Walsh captive while the remaining surviving passengers seek out help. What ensues is a battle of wills, blurring the line between captor and captive, as they both try to survive the harsh western landscape.

This movie is more John Ford and Sergio Leone in that the characters talk too much. If it had been a little more Sergio and a little less John, it would've been an even better movie.

Mandler’s brilliant “Surrounded” is everything dedicated fans of Westerns could possibly want. It is a throwback in every sense of the word and could have been produced at any point in the last 70 or so years by the likes of Ford, Hawks, or Eastwood.

Mandler shines the spotlight on the thorny relationship that develops between Mo and Tommy. Wright and Bell both deliver outstanding performances in their roles, though the script shortchanges both characters in terms of their development.

It is a slow burn Western film with some excellent moments. The story is nothing very unique. It still manages to be a good Western overall. Letitia Wright looks fantastic and her character is great to watch. Jamie Bell also delivers an amazing performance. Both actors go head to head with incredible energy and keep the intensity high. The visuals are superb throughout the movie. It is a solid and good film overall.

Letitia Wright shoots a capable mark amongst the genre legends as she strengthens her peak in a traditional yet conversational western that socially ponders through provocative themes upwards a satisfying conclusion. (B+)

Synopsis
