Zombies have taken over the world, and a ragtag band of soldiers led by Sarge Crockett roams the countryside trying to scavenge what they can. Constantly on guard against flesh-eaters, the group is intrigued when they hear of a safe haven on Plum Island. But when they arrive, they find the supposed paradise torn apart by a family feud between the O'Flynns, who want to exterminate all zombies, and the Muldoons, who coexist peacefully with their undead relatives.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Survival of the Dead offers glimmers of Romero's savage wit, but not nearly enough to make up for his unusually uninspired directing and a lack of new ideas

Even Romero's staunchest fans might conclude their hero is going through the motions here. Yes, almost like a zombie. Go to Full Review Jason Anderson Toronto Star Aug 19, 2010

What we've got here is a just a B-movie western with buckets of gore, which might be fine coming from a Romero wannabe but not from the genuine article. Go to Full Review Perri Nemiroff CinemaBlend Aug 14, 2010

There's something here for enthusiasts to enjoy, but to newcomers or those lacking an appreciation for Romero's work, Survival of the Dead is a zombie soap opera. Go to Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Sep 12, 2025

George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead feels like it was made by a younger, less talented director trying to accomplish something like Romero’s own classics of the now-tired zombie subgenre. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Robert P @Superbad 2 days ago Survival of the Dead is a *1* star Movie! See more B P @Bradster69 Sep 27, 2026 Not Bad, but Not My Favorite See more Fro T @frothizzlereviews Sep 18, 2026 My favorite filmmaker at his worst. I’ve always been sad that Survival was Romero’s last before he passed away. There's some nice moments of carnage, but it doesn't save how weightless this movie is. 3/10 See more Rich C. @Cordu0702 Mar 24, 2026 Decent film. Not George's best. See more George M @Milkyway Oct 19, 2025 The worst of Romero's Living Dead films, I really have to wonder what he was thinking making this trash. So there's an enclave of irish people living off the coast of Delaware? And they believe zombies can be cured? (This and the zombies eating a horse after only eating people in the other films, ripped off from The Walking Dead ). A silly, ill-acted, ill-conceived waste of time. See more Daniel D @DanielDuVall Oct 17, 2025 The lower budget gives it an unfortunately amateur feeling overall, but there are a few ideas that are able to shine through and highlight what made Romero’s undead fascinate us from the beginning.
