Based on true events, “Tenzing” chronicles the little-known story of Tenzing Norgay, a gifted Himalayan climber who, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary, was the first to summit Mount Everest. Encouraged by his wife Dawa, Tenzing finds an ally in expedition secretary Jill Henderson. Together, they persuade Colonel John Hunt that Tenzing belongs on the British climbing team, rather than merely serving it. Where Western climbers see “Everest” as something to be conquered, Tenzing reveres “Chomolungma” as the sacred mother goddess. What follows is an ascent defined as much by the tensions between backgrounds, classes and competing ambitions as by the perils of the mountain itself. But high above the world, empire, rank and aspiration fall away, leaving two outsiders bound by mutual respect and trust — and for Tenzing, the fulfillment of both a lifelong dream and a spiritual calling.

Tenzing earns its inspirational fervor, but the reason it fits into the new wave of mountain-climbing movies is that the director, Jennifer Peedom... has staged it with a you-are-there authenticity that’s breathtaking but never showy. Go to Full Review

This is a solid crowdpleaser that employs a flashback structure to explore Tenzing’s early life and deep spiritual connection with the mountain he, like his fellow Sherpas, reveres as a sacred mother goddess. Go to Full Review

Would a Tibetan film-maker have immersed us even more thoroughly in Tenzing’s world and excluded the British more? Maybe. At any rate, Genden Phuntsok’s charm carries the picture. Go to Full Review

Climbing Everest, some considered themselves conquerors. Humbly honoring the persistent draw he harbored all his life, Tenzing felt himself grateful for having been granted the privilege of being in the presence of the mountain grandeur. Go to Full Review

A biopic reminiscent of 1980s and '90s-era epics like Gandhi and The Last Emperor, this is an emotional and uplifting film that centers on a lesser-known historical figure. Go to Full Review
