Jesús and Maria love each other, endlessly, magnificently, even though they sometimes just don't notice. But hey, now that their little lump of love is born, everything's going to work out. Sure, Maria still has a bit of a North-Korean streak in handling the household, calling all the shots when it comes to the color of their apartment walls, the name of the baby, the food they eat, the TV shows they watch, the thickness of the toilet paper and their holiday destination. Jesús, to prove to her and himself he ain't some spineless trilobite but that he has a will of his own, gets to pick the coffee table. Halleluiah! A hard-won victory that he's cherishing by picking out the most aggressively ugly little thing imaginable, the furniture equivalent of Liberace getting lost in Ikea. An unbreakable wonder, says the salesman. Overpriced, says Maria. It will bring boundless happiness to their lives, says the salesman. Their worst nightmare, says us....

Not for the faint-hearted, The Coffee Table breaks the boundaries of being a simple horror film or a dark comedy, paying off for those brave enough to watch. Why did he think it was a brilliant idea to purchase a glass coffee table when there is the health and safety of a newborn baby at home to worry about? I thought you were supposed to have everything baby-proofed at home. Nope, not in this story. He brings home a murder weapon of a coffee table and then accidentally drops his baby right through the pane of glass, instantly killing his son. Dude, why?! Was the lame sales pitch about the coffee table being indestructible truly a believable selling point? I would imagine the father should have gone into a nuclear meltdown of an anxiety attack after the incident occurred. However, after all is said and done about its story, I truly wonder if Lars von Trier would have taken the script for this movie and made it shockingly more depressing than it already is. See more Peter C @RT59700763 Mar 16 Not necessarily a horror movie with jump scares, but rather a slow burning movie that leaves you gut wrenched and disturbed the entire time as it almost feels like the only people who know what's going on (or what is under the chair) are you and the main character. I'd say this was the first film that truly made me feel sick to my stomach on how exactly it was going to end. It makes you want to see the finish, not out of excitement, but out of dread.
