Zach is a horror-movie obsessive who'd rather draw gruesome comic books in class than concentrate on his studies -- so when his cousin Mark invites him to work at the legendary Haunted Forest, Zach is thrilled beyond belief. On his first night, he meets Sarah, a beautiful and intriguing makeup artist, as well as Jacko, a veteran employee who takes Zach under his wing. Zach is living his best life, indulging his passion for all things morbid -- but when Jacko is found dead, the magical world of the Forest begins to seem sinister, and Zach can't help but wonder where the killer will strike next....

There is no sense of urgency up until the last ten or so minutes. This includes all deaths being off-screen (including the first one which is presented to the audience in one of the most jarring edits ever) and a surprising lack of blood for a slasher.

Writer/Director Keith Boynton’s first venture into horror is both an homage and a love letter to the genre. Throwback scenes to classic horror movie tropes, a Hitchcockian psychological thriller storyline, excellent performances and exceptionally lovely visuals achieved in collaboration with Director of Photography Aitor Mendilibar at the real-life scare location Markoff's Haunted Forest guarantee that this offering will not disappoint. The movie also satisfies on a horror level. While much of the mayhem is committed out of frame, the bloody aftermath is there to see courtesy of excellent props and effects. A few well-planted jump-scares, as well as the writer/director’s trademark suspenseful ambiguity and plot twist near the end guarantee a great ride. If you are looking for dystopia, look elsewhere. But if you want a good old-fashioned cuddle-up-and-watch horror/slasher that is well-made, fun, engaging, and great to look at, don’t miss Keith Boynton’s "The Haunted Forest."
