Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review 12/02/2020
For me it the funny bits weren't funny enough the tragic bits weren't tragic enough and the tragic comedy never sat as easily together as it should have done. Go to Full Review

Evan Morgan must be commended for crafting one of the most compelling neo-noirs of recent times, especially in his ability to skirt around some heavy subjects without a hint of contrivance. Go to Full Review

This film’s riff on Disney detectives, its intentional misrepresentation, is clever in a way I wasn’t expecting. It’s a real original, and a treat. Go to Full Review

Kalissa H @kali_416 3h Better than I thought it would be. I liked the twist at the end. See more Sarah N @RT94124993 8h The movie as a whole was upsetting and misrepresented on Netflix. While I found the plot and execution compelling, based on the previews, categorization as a comedy, and being recommended based on my profile, I was expecting something hilarious and lighthearted (eg Psych). I kept waiting for the story to turn around until I realized who the murderer was and why, at which point, I had sunk an hour of my time into this plot and wanted to see it through. While the movie is very good, the disappointment and dysphoria caused by the misrepresentation on Netflix created resentment. That was not how I wanted to spend my night. I do have to say the casting was done very well. It would be better classified as a drama-tragedy. It was not very funny, even on the spectrum of dark comedy, despite the rare comedic moment. See more Lucas A @LucasAshby 18h I loved this movie. So many layers to this from just incredible writing. One of those scripts that should’ve gotten much more attention because of the rug pulls, dark comedic elements, and depth of the characters. Adam Brody brings a great performance to this. The ending is exceptional. I’m glad to have found this one on Netflix. See more Stacey C @RT90213541 20h This movie is highly disturbing. There is nothing funny about it. The story line is painfully slow, not fun to watch or with an ounce of humor or basic good sense. The actors did as a good a job as they could with a creepy plotline, slow burn and a very disturbing visual. I wish I never watched this awful film. A complete waste of time. See more Lisette W @RT46823887 1d Great production along with a tightly-written script in itself makes this movie worth the watch. Those who complain "not funny enough" or "tragic enough" (whatever that's supposed to mean) maybe don't appreciate the subtle tension and dry wit of film noir. Kid Detective has heart and it doesn't beat its audience over their heads with a stick to make its point. See more Deborah C @debc327 5d It is sad. And funny, and sad again. Adam Brody is very good as a tortured ex “kid” detective, now an adult detective unable to grapple with the guilt , regret and success of his childhood. See more Read all reviews
