Critics Consensus

The Nice Guys hearkens back to the buddy comedies of a bygone era while adding something extra courtesy of a knowing script and the irresistible chemistry of its leads.

What's memorable about The Nice Guys is the crew of not-so-nice kids: the 12- through 18-year-olds who seem remarkably unbothered when bumping heads with coke-addled pornographers.

Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are a good match in The Nice Guys. But writer-director Shane Black's screenplay seldom strikes fire.

Though it can veer off of the rails to some scatterbrained wheel-spinning that pushes limits of tolerance and believability, the screenplay delivers its muckraking mystery with a canny enough level of perpetual action and a clever humor.

A wonderful slice of entertainment, The Nice Guys is Shane Black doing what he does best. The film riffs on his previous back catalogue, mixing in a 1970s groove to keep things feeling fresh.

Like any detective story, The Nice Guys hits those same genre beats, but instead of coming off like a series of cliches, Black creates a unique experience.

Boring. Boring. Boring. No storyline. Slow moving. Just because it is set in the 70s doesn't mean it has to be a Boring 70s movie.

Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are basically two human train wrecks stumbling through 1970s Los Angeles, accidentally solving a mystery while fucking up just about everything else along the way. The dialogue is filthy, fast, and gloriously stupid in exactly the right way. Gosling's physical comedy alone deserves its own goddamn trophy. Every time you think he can't possibly make things more ridiculous, he finds a way. And Crowe plays the perfect exhausted bastard opposite him, like a guy who desperately wants to maintain some dignity while the universe keeps handing him Ryan Gosling. The result is a buddy detective movie with bullets, booze, conspiracies, broken bones, and enough dick jokes to make your inner twelve-year-old stand up and applaud. The Nice Guys doesn't reinvent the buddy-cop movie. It just gets drunk, punches it in the face, steals its wallet, and makes you laugh while doing it. Fuck subtlety. Give me more movies like this.

Watched this last night with my wife, I laughed my guts out. Just let the director do their job and you're down for a special treat if you want to grab a laugh after looking at beautiful pictures every frame. The movie is so pretty, colorful. Everyone, the scenery, the cars, and the clothing look fantastic. It's as funny as a movie can be. I mean, you'll really laugh HARD

Don’t hear much about this one but I found it very entertaining. The casting was perfect. Kinda quirky, maybe not for everyone but I wanna see it again.
