Critics Consensus

A beguiling tragicomedy, Vicky Cristina Barcelona charms with beautiful views of the Spanish city and a marvelously well-matched cast.

This is a slight film, a minor Allen film, a bit of a footnote, but it's warm and engaging and isn't Matchpoint, Scoop or Cassandra's Dream, which has to be a mercy.

Allen seems uninterested in pushing his material beyond impersonally generic, or even in thinking things through.

The movie is never as funny or as clever as it tries to be, and it ultimately falls apart in its nonsensical third act.

The worst aspect of Vicky Cristina Barcelona is its attitude toward art and creativity, which is entirely superficial.

I loved this movie and have turned on multiple others to it. Every one of them agrees that it is excellent. VCB is charming, witty, funny, and it makes you long for a trip to Spain. Classic Woody Allen dialog paired with beautiful actors.

What a piece of pretentious crap. The documentary style narration was extremely annoying

The movie that reunited Javier and Penelope. They fell in love and started a family. Isn't that lovely? As Woody prepares a new movie in Spain (his third), it's worth saying that VCB is, for my money, his best movie of the new millennium. Never mind Midnight in Paris (2011), or Blue Jasmine (2013), both of which are quite derivative. VCB has an energy, a life affirming vivacity, and a brevity, quite unlike any Woody movie since Zelig. No jokes, despite it being a comedy, and no jazz, thank heavens; just Spanish guitar and humorous romantic predicaments. There's also no Woody character in it. I'm still in awe of the way Javier's Juan Antonio saunters across the restaurant and coolly tries to pick-up both Vicky and Cristina. All it takes is confidence, and a private jet, amigos. A fresh love triangle comes into existence with the arrival of Cruz's unstable ex-wife, Maria Elena. Cruz got an Oscar for her performance, and Madrid got jealous, hence the new movie on the horizon.

Normal que le dieran un Oscar a Penélope Cruz aquí.

★★★★★ Absolutely loved this movie. The vibe, the music, the chemistry between the characters — everything felt so natural and artistic. It made me want to book a flight to Barcelona immediately. Penélope Cruz completely stole the show for me. Such a beautiful, emotional, and unforgettable film.
