Everyone was solid here and has a rich sense of place. Go to Full Review

Sometimes I thought Kangaroo Island was about to devolve into Hallmarkian slosh and lose me completely, only for David (a first-time feature film-maker) to get me back on side, more or less, by creating small moments that really resonate. Go to Full Review

This is a solid debut film by the advertising creative director (full name Timothy David Piper) who came up with the green gecko character for tyre manufacturer Bridgestone Australia. Go to Full Review

The results add up to what they need to, as this is no epic saga but a personal story about people with conflicting views that must find common ground, even as other aspects of their lives fall down around them. Go to Full Review

At first glance, Kangaroo Island looks like it will be a typical drama about a woman who goes back to her hometown and reconnects with a past love. But this well-acted movie has meaningful layers about mortality and family relationships. Go to Full Review

The fractured family dynamics are too familiar, redeemed only partially by committed performances and heartfelt intentions. Go to Full Review

Colin R Apr 24 Finally. It's been a long time since I enjoyed an ambitious indie. Artistic, but also an audience pleaser. Big topics. Lots of heart. Not for the low brow. See more Mark D @surfnsailor 21h Kangaroo Island is a thoughtful family drama with many twists and turns, and characters who discover or uncover hidden qaulities. And their process rolls toward a more satisfactory life for those who really want it and can tolerate some pain and take some risks. Yes, some commenters claimed parts of the story were "predictable". First, I disagree. The crowd I was with laughed at the jokes, winced at the awkward conflicts, and clapped with enthusiasm at the end. So they had not been able to predict any of it. Second, most movies based on our worldly existing reality contain events that can be guessed at. So "predictable" is often a cheap shot by people who are only happy when they criticize. The movie-making craft and acting were excellent. Go see the movie with an open mind, and you will enjoy it. See more Arthur Marshall 3d Every 'Home & Away' cliche is chucked in here, and half of them are useless and don't go anywhere. Can one person possibly explain what the dead kid added to the story? The car crash? The old friend with a crush, which is never addressed again? I'll wait. The film can't decide its genre, ping - ponging between a sentimental drama, and generic MCU comedy. Except for that utterly tasteless mountain lion joke, which was something out of Family Guy (and not older, wittier Family Guy). A forced attempt to be 'edgy', and particularly egregious when juxtaposed with how seriously and compassionately the film takes the father's illness. Woefully uneven in tone. It's like a screenwriter took a philosophy class at uni, heard about the Epicurean paradox and other theological dilemmas, and decided to dump them into a screenplay. None of this is properly woven into the story, and it's a cop - out bringing up perplexing philosophical questions, without doing the hard work of unpacking it. The recurring luggage 'joke' is somehow given more exploration. The final betrayal? Simply calling the film 'Kangaroo Island' and definitively, irrevocably tying a real place to a Hallmark comedy. Doesn't do the actual island justice at all now any other film or documentary will have to differentiate itself. See more Diane N @dnili 4d Enjoyable and engaging. Great acting and beautiful scenery. See more jenna K @RT08985399 4d A really well written, well acted family drama with plenty of comedy along the way, but by the end prepare for the waterworks. See more Alan N @AlanN5 5d A heartfelt, well-crafted film. Thoughtfully presented and emotionally engaging from beginning to end. See more Read all reviews
