Critics Consensus

Celebrating the virtues of fortitude and patience, La Grazia is an atypically restrained effort from writer-director Paolo Sorrentino that reunites him with the dependably majestic Toni Servillo.

Either La Grazia is Sorrentino’s best movie in a while, or it’s taken me this long to acquire a taste for the strange flavour of his work, where the studied weirdness masks the actual weirdness beneath. Go to Full Review

Servillo gives the film its heart. His performance is never theatrical, quite the opposite. But every pause, hesitation, silence, speaks volumes about his character’s burdens. That face does its work. It’s a face that cannot bore. Go to Full Review

La Grazia sees Sorrentino at his most sober and sincere, and his doleful muse, Servillo, at his formidable best. Go to Full Review

Tushar G Jan 7 what a perfect movie See more Lucia Jan 5 Anyone who appreciates the storytelling style of Paolo Sorrentino and his collaborative process with Toni Servillo will want to see this film — another fresh take on self reflection, lifes meaning, the importance of whats true or not true, and the impact of the choices we make. I was captivated for the entire 2 hrs and 11 minutes. See more Howie B @Howie10 5d Servillo is perfectly cast and portrays the Italian President with grace and believability. The proposition that a judge is placed in this role as decider of a law on euthanasia is both profound and complex. A black pontiff was perhaps a stretch, but the point of the dilemma is not distracted by this. Relationships with his children and the on-going grief of the passing of his wife as well as a deep rooted obsession with not knowing who was a lover his wife had some 40 years ago. He had convinced himself a life long friend was the one. This added another layer of intrigue as his decision to resign early so as to have a vote on the next President could be assured by his senator-for-life status. The other matter of Presidential pardons was explored well and his inquisitorial jurist background allowed him to conduct an investigation in the way he would have as a judge under the European system of law. Probably the the most abstract component of the film is his appreciation of rap music. See more Damian O @Alcatraz Apr 2 Classic film making where the subtle art of gently demonstrating thought is floated to the audience with skill and sensitivity. A masterpiece. See more Ralph B @Rebell50 Mar 22 So much philosophy annd so much style. Deeply thought provoking and moving around the thorny contempory issues. See more Alec B @Alec97 Feb 27 Definitely one of the better movies about a man who seems incapable of making decisions. Wisdom may come with age but sometimes weighing all those options can paralyze you. Maybe then you try to pick grace over everything else. Its strangely beguiling work and one worth revisiting.
