What to Know

Critics Consensus

Masters of the Universe is a slapdash adaptation of the He-Man mythos that can't overcome its cynical lack of raison d'etre, no matter how admirably Frank Langella throws himself into the role of Skeletor.

Everyone knows how the battles will turn out. It`s what's between them that raises Masters Of The Universe ever so slightly above the mediocre. Go to Full Review

With Masters of the Universe -- the latest numbskull entertainment from the creators of Castle Greyskull -- He-Man makes the transition from animation to live action. Taking a live actor along for the ride might have helped. Go to Full Review

A misfiring, underdone epic that takes its inspiration not from life or literature, but from a toy line and the cartoon series it inspired. Go to Full Review

Perhaps the biggest fault to this picture is Lundgren’s casting; he certainly looks the part, but he brings nothing to the table when it comes to acting. Go to Full Review

Sure, Masters of the Universe is a movie based on a TV series that was developed to sell war toys to children, but it's a whole lot more: This is pyro-technical submerged sexuality at its intergalactic best. Go to Full Review

Justin A @RT81731483 1h A severely underrated 80s sci-classic that took a silly, often stupid Saturday morning cartoon for toddlers, and turned it into an action-packed, sci-fi fantasy tale. This movie is often bemoaned by critics and so-called 'fans' of MOTU as being terrible and unwatchable, or not what they wanted, but it stands up as a solid popcorn flick. I've had the pleasure of showing this movie to several people who were not 'fans' of the cartoon, they were just in the mood for a silly 80s action movie, and they gave it 2 thumbs up. Frank Langella carried the film, but you can see the love for this project woven into everything, including the costumes and the practical effects. Dolph Lundgren is a likeable hero. This movie is a product of it's time, but its superior to many films today, and tickles the kid in you. You're welcome to dislike it, if you buy into the crying bald fat nerds, or you can take it all in and enjoy a good sci-fi romp. See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch 6h Masters of the Universe is a fantasy sci-fi adaptation that feels ambitious but uneven. It takes the Eternia mythology and shifts much of the story to Earth, which reduces the scale and limits the world-building. The pacing is rushed, with quick scene transitions that leave little room for character or story development, making the narrative feel fragmented. Dolph Lundgren brings strong physical presence as He-Man, though emotional depth is limited. Frank Langella stands out as Skeletor with a theatrical, committed performance. Courteney Cox adds a grounded, more relatable presence. The practical effects and creature designs are very 1980s, sometimes charming, sometimes unconvincing, especially by modern standards. Overall, Masters of the Universe is a cult film with strong performances and an interesting concept, but its rushed storytelling, tonal inconsistency, and limited adaptation hold it back from being a fully cohesive fantasy adventure. See more Julian C @juliancooper_12 1d While you get a good performance from Frank Langella as Skeletor, Dolph Lundgren as He-Man was miscasted and it feels like it’s an extension of the cartoon series See more John H @RT48852937 1d I love this movie its got great action and a great cast and story I have seen a lot of people rewatching this because of the new movie but this movie is great. Skeletor and Evilyn are brilliant the dialogue is almost shakespearian in tone. The soldiers Troppers warlords Centurians are fantastic to watch. lubric is the comedy relief along with Gwildor. the mercenaries are my favourite characters Blade Karg Saurod and Beast Man. The heroes are great and the battles are so cool. its a great cult classic 80s movie go watch it now. See more Robert S @Recklessrob96 1d It could have been a lot better but a decent movie See more Nathan J. @NathanDirector 3d Rating: 5.2/10 ⭐️ Prepping for the new 2026 film dropping this week. Expected a cheesy 80s toy movie, but Langella’s unhinged Skeletor totally saved it for me. What Worked: • Watching He-Man slash through enemies honestly hits that satisfying Action RPG vibe. • Langella is top-tier; his theatrical energy as Skeletor steals every single scene. • Grayskull’s gothic sets and matte paintings add so much cool 80s charm. The Friction: • Characters wandering Earth for the Cosmic Key took too long. I honestly just wanted them back in Eternia. • Gwildor felt too goofy, and the middle part really dragged for me thanks to Gwildor. • The final showdown felt super rushed; I wanted a longer He-Man vs. Skeletor duel. Verdict: Watch for a campy 80s fantasy with an incredible villain. Skip if cheesy Earth plots bore you. See more Read all reviews
