Based on the stories of Damon Runyon (who also inspired GUYS & DOLLS), it is performed entirely in the wacky, somewhat stilted dialogue that Runyon is known for, but it lends the shady characters a significant amount of sweetness. Julie Hagerty, Madonna, and Dinah Manoff are especially hilarious. In the end, love conquers all, the good guys make out, and the bad guys are punished, but knowing what the characters do not about what 1929 has in store is bittersweet. The singing duet between Madonna and Jennifer Gray is to be included in an ideal cinematographic encyclopedia of musical numbers. There are murders, crap games, and other assorted mayhem. It begins at Mindy's "infamous" restaurant. That's where, as you may (or may not) recall, Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando contemplated the sales of cheesecake and strudel. Like Mr. Sinatra, these folks say "beautiful" in all four syllables. They get the lingo, but it never really seems like genuine Damon Runyon. And, the film has good trappings, but fails to catch anything resembling a good story. See more Read all reviews
