What to Know

Critics Consensus

Zoe Kazan imbues her legacy adaptation with delicious moral quandaries and sumptuous landscapes, but it's the expanded character work from Pugh and Lee that brings justice and dignity to this new canon of East of Eden.

Audience Says

Despite a heavy premise, East of Eden's 20th century mise-en-scène and gripping pace make this Steinbeck adaptation an undeniably bingeable watch.

Credit to Kazan for finding a new way to tell it, and for making it accessible to a new audience. Go to Full Review

For a few twists of fate, [Cathy] could be any of us. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Pugh’s exquisite, gorgeously brutal rendition leads more of us to her defense. Go to Full Review

This is not my normal wheelhouse. I'm not a lit nerd... That's not usually my thing. But even if I didn't have to watch this for this show, I would probably finish it. I was that kind of into it and invested in these characters. Go to Full Review

The characters, the emotion, the depth of the story — everything was so beautifully done. It’s one of those shows that stays with you long after the final episode. I loved it so much that it inspired me to get the book! Highly recommend! I’ll be shocked and surprised if the show and cast don’t win awards. Incredible cast, performance and production. Not a dry eye in the house by the end. See more Kyle K @RT36352745 5 hrs ago Brilliant, incredible show, the acting is amazing, the story is incredible. I can’t wait to see what awards this one wins. Best show I’ve watched all year. See more Heather D @Heatha 5 hrs ago Bravo to Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre and Garth Davis! The casting was absolute perfection. There is no easy way to describe Florence Pugh’s portrayal of Cathy other than raw, chilling, emotionally powerful, and fiercely strong. She is mesmerizing. And Joseph Zada, his performance makes it abundantly clear that he is going to be a force to be reckoned with in his career. He brings such a raw, deeply moving emotional intensity to the role. The scene where Cal brings Aron to meet Cathy, a scene built around just four words was one of the most emotional and effortless moments in the entire series. Florence managed to convey every single emotion in that one scene. The power of it was extraordinary. Sometimes, the smallest moments leave the biggest impact, and this was a perfect example. As a huge fan of the original book, I can honestly say this series did not disappoint. It captured the heart, darkness, and emotional complexity of the story in such a compelling way.
