At an Army barracks in Hawaii in the days preceding the attack on Pearl Harbor, lone-wolf soldier and boxing champion Prew Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) refuses to box, preferring to play the bugle instead. Hard-hearted Capt. Holmes (Philip Ober) subjects Prew to a grueling series of punishments while, unknown to Holmes, the gruff but fair Sgt. Warden (Burt Lancaster) engages in a clandestine affair with the captain's mistreated wife (Deborah Kerr).

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It has perhaps aged poorly, but this languidly paced WWII romance remains an iconic, well-acted film, featuring particularly strong performances from Burt Lancaster and Montgomery Clift.

Jones' bulky book does such an honest job of storytelling that it triumphs over its pedestrian prose; the movie succeeds by the smooth efficiency of Fred Zinnemann's lean, intelligent direction, and by the superlative casting. Go to Full Review Richard L. Coe Washington Post Jul 25, 2022
You will ask how closely this follows the events and rugged dialogue of the book. There are omissions, particularly of language, but the story changes have a stunning ring of truth to them. Go to Full Review Marjory Adams Boston Globe Mar 17, 2022

Fred Zinnemann's strength as a director was less on the technical side and more in line with coaxing stellar performances out of his actors, and with this film, he drew a royal flush. Go to Full Review Ian Kane Epoch Times Sep 3, 2024

Its portrayal of military life was gritty for its time, showing that the struggles and flaws of service members are just as complex as those in civilian society. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

I came to realize that From Here to Eternity is a dated, lackluster film that hinges on interpersonal conflict, which ultimately feels underwhelming to audiences looking for something more engaging. See more Christian K @ckacar Jan 28, 2026 A straight melodrama that I can't say intrigued me very much, despite its well-regarded cast. The characters and drama fell flat on the screen. See more Bookies B @BookiesBeat Jan 8, 2026 Burt Lancaster and Kerr's soap opera scenes are difficult to sit through and drag on for too long. They seem at odds with the rest of the pictures' more "realistic" approach, elevated by Montgomery Clift's fine acting but not enough to compensate for lacklustre storytelling. This movie seemed more aimed at the housewives of middle America who require a Disneyfied version of reality. The author James Jones didn't appear to be impressed with it either.
