Not long after having his portrait painted by the artist Basil Hallward (Charles Aidman), handsome Dorian Gray (Shane Briant) meets Lord Harry Wotton (Nigel Davenport) and falls under his influence. A radical libertine, Wotton encourages the boy to indulge every hedonistic impulse, and soon Dorian becomes notorious for his debauchery. Looking at his own portrait one day, he fancifully wishes that it might age rather than he -- and, miraculously, gets his wish.

See more Jun 24, 2021 This is an okay film, but it's more important to read the book. The book is very short, but it is Biblical. Central to Dorian Gray's downfall is a very George Carlin-esque know-it-all, who lifts the curtain on all the social realities surrounding Dorian, while reminding him of the short shelf life of his beauty. In this revealing, Dorian becomes a monster, although a physically perfect and always young and attractive man. I have read this book a few times and the ending is never resolved for me. It's a flood of philosophical poetry with the dull thud of an Arthur Miller finale. See more Jul 13, 2017 Watching this movie is like watching a British soap opera on PBS. See more Read all reviews
