Thomas V @TomVee 5d Terrific, unusual war film; a spirited, action packed 2+ hours that immediately called to mind the OSS Simple Sabotage Field Manual from World War II that had a resurgence on the internet not too long ago. That was a fascinating read, and this is a fascinating visual how-to tutorial in a sense. This is a highly exaggerated version of a true story, and Frankenheimer runs up a considerable body count, but that allows him to ask us the question of what value we place on culture and art as opposed to human life or monetary value. The question is spelled out for us in a not so subtle way, but rather than ponder the moral question, perhaps it's best to view the film as simply an exciting and extremely well done war picture with a terrific physical performance from Burt Lancaster, and a wonderfully over the top, self-interested Nazi played by Paul Scofield. The film features great practical effects too, reminding us how much better the real fake thing is than CGI.
