What to Know

Critics Consensus

Shia LaBeouf clearly relishes his role in Charlie Countryman, but his efforts can't salvage the movie's shallow script and overstuffed direction.

As for Shia, he's wildly self-indulgent and narcissistic: all puppy eyes, emoting and angsting like there's no tomorrow. He just doesn't know when eneouf is eneouf. Go to Full Review Kate Muir The Times (UK) Oct 31, 2014

The weird filmography of Shia LaBeouf, from Fury to Nymphomaniac via Transformers, continues with an ecstasy-fuelled excursion to eastern Europe in the bizarre The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman. Go to Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) Oct 31, 2014

This is a weird and self-indulgent affair that is easy to mock but that, just occasionally, captures the romantic feel of the equally pretentious but magical Leos Carax films of the late 1980s. Go to Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Aug 29, 2019

The film plays like the interrupted fantasy of some melancholic teenager who falls asleep listening to ultra-hip tracks on his iPod. Go to Full Review Patrick Gamble CineVue Apr 3, 2019

A fatuous thriller masquerading as a trashy, vigorous love story, Bond's latest is perhaps one of the most ridiculous and flawed films released this year -- yet remains curiously lovable. Go to Full Review Hayden Manders Refinery29 Jun 28, 2017
To say it's one of the more important films to surface this year wouldn't be an understatement, but it wouldn't be an overstatement, either. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Maria S @Coolkid_ Aug 4, 2026 High end blues for the captivated eye. Lunatic and tedious but heart gripping at its best. Looser-like and kind of believable. Eatable to me -I liked it ⛵️🏴‍☠️ See more Martin D @Mpd195 Mar 3, 2026 Very self indulgent film, from acting to writing. Inconsistent, in its mood and tone. Very much a film of style over substance. Feels hollow. Shia LaBeouf has the worst of the self indulgent performances. Mads Mikkelsen's performance is the only saving grace that I find. And even then his character has a stupid name for the setting (obviously not his fault) See more Nicholas I @Nickybags Dec 7, 2025 This movie is a blast, features great performances, has a killer soundtrack & score and is just an overall good time. Don't listen to the critics on this one. See more Allison B @RT31532524 May 12, 2025 My favorite movie of all time. The 26% on Rotten Tomatoes is straight-up offensive. I will not tolerate Charlie Countryman slander. ✋🏻 This film feels like a dream—ethereal, chaotic, violent, and somehow still tender. A magical roller coaster I never want to get off. I’m a sucker for stories set abroad, where your worldview stretches with every scene. And Charlie’s freefall into love by trusting the universe? What a journey. I want a man to look at me the way Charlie looks at Gabi. Also, the soundtrack is AMAZING. I even downloaded some songs lol. One of the songs is Stars by The XX 👌🏻 Love it all. See more Kit K @RT72328294 May 10, 2025 it was horrible. only reason i made it through was Mads Mikkelsen. Nigel was great, everything else lacked depth and story See more Ramos, Haylhey Barbiezel L @RT80362376 Mar 29, 2025 One star for Mads Mikkelsen. it sucked and the only reason I watched this dipshit is because of Nigel. the main character genuinely pisses me off I mean dude be deadass right now. He keeps doing all that even if it would endanger him and the girl, mf go back to America and the girl's standards downgraded cause gym you go from Nigel to whatever that is.
