Blake- N @PBSAniDom May 18 While both Conan the Barbarian (1982) and Conan the Destroyer (1984) share the same legendary character, the 1982 film stands far above in terms of tone, atmosphere, and overall impact. It feels more grounded, intense, and iconic, which makes it the definitive Conan experience for me. In comparison, Conan the Destroyer takes a more lighthearted, adventure-focused approach. While that makes it more accessible, it also reduces the grit and weight that made the first film so memorable. It never quite reaches the same level of immersion or intensity. Overall, I still enjoy Conan the Destroyer for what it is, but it doesn't surpass its predecessor. It’s a decent fantasy sequel, just lacking the raw power of the original. I’d give it a 5/10. The dedication of the actors to the storyline and poorly written lines of dialogue is undeniable. Watching Conan and his crew fight through castles and against various monsters is enjoyable thanks to the remarkable visuals, the majestic sound effects and the epic score by Basil Poledouris. This film is pure fun and shouldn't be taken seriously. See more Thom N @RT68992806 Jun 13 The producers' idea to lower the violence and increase the humor results in a beautifully strange mishmash. I personally felt it came together very nicely, and visually it is unbelievably stunning, even 40 years later. More silly and odd stuff from emeritus Marvel editor Roy Thomas (who I recently saw in a Q&A at 2Rivers Con, and who was a funny guy and very candid). The seemingly random celebrity features are a little off-putting at first, but Grace Jones really was a great casting for this role. A lot more mid-80s humor than I expected, but it came together to make some real cine-magic.
