It took much too long to get going for a film that wasn't very long. The best things about it were the setting and the visuals. The script was mediocre and the story was mostly predictable. See more DanTheMan 2 @DanTheMan2150AD Oct 16 Revelling in the grimy atmospherics of Central London, Death Line is a brilliant mix of a police thriller and arthouse slasher, melded to a corpse-filled underground world inhabited by cannibals. A raw, visceral and often unflinching exploration of the monstrous, the film lends an intriguing, sympathetic eye toward the underclass symbolised in the form of a wandering cannibal. Equally eerie and deeply sad, you'll never hear the words "mind the doors" the same way ever again. Gary Sherman takes what could be a potentially trashy and ludicrous concept and gives it the A-grade treatment, using the concept as a metaphor for something completely different. The result of his high-minded intentions is a deceptively complex film tailor-made for cult fandom. One that manages to be mysterious, moving, and somewhat melancholy. The directing and photography are simply fab, stylishly grungy, and hauntingly effective, delving deep through the pitch-black, rat-infested tunnels with terrifying fluidity and a deeply unnerving, rumbustiously sleazy musical score to match. Beyond its terror overtones, what ultimately gives the film a tremendous lift is the delightful repartee between Donald Pleasence and Norman Rossington. Pleasence bites into the sardonic possibilities with relish, given free rein to pretty much play Calhoun as he pleases, bouncing off Rossington's Rogers with joy. Although the story takes quite a while to come together, when it does, Death Line is the most fun you can have on the Piccadilly Line since they banned drinking on the tube. Personally, I'd have preferred less of the depressed cannibal scenes, and more suspense building. See more isla s @RT89656869 09/04/2022 This is a relatively spooky and sinister feeling film with a distinct b-movie feel to it. The visual effects are effective given the time it was made in (it dates from 1972). It's also very much a dark film and I mean in terms of various scenes taking place in all but sheer darkness, dark parts of the London underground, so it's not a film to watch when/if there's a lot of sunlight near your TV to get in the way. This film would no doubt scare young kids and anyone especially squeamish, although I can't say I found myself screaming. I thought the incidental music used was quite good and (as surprising as it may be) I found some of the dialogue somewhat amusing. The evil villian type made me think of Quasimodo from the Hunchback of Notre Dame, living in his quiet and dark little lair. As films of this sort go, this is ok - maybe a bit cheesy even but ok, yes. I suppose, if anything, it's good to see that the young woman who notices the body, at the start of the film, cares enough to wonder about what happened to the person found.
